Sexism: Rise Above It

Actress Jennifer Garner spoke out against sexism in the entertainment industry at Elle's annual Women in Hollywood event.

Now, look at the comments at the bottom of that ABC article, many of which reinforce that sexism exists.  Here's another article and look at those comments.

In fact, I visited 10 websites with the same Jennifer Garner story and the majority of commenters are SEXIST!

Sadly, it's no surprise.

Sexism.  It still exists.  Here we are in 2014 and sexism is prevalent in many industries.  Don't believe me that's it's everywhere?  It's in the fabric of our lives.  We are taught from a young age to trust men and empower men over women.

Attend 10 weddings and 10 funerals.  Which sex do you see conducting the majority of those services?  Men or women?  Men.

There's a higher trust in men because society has always been patriarchal.  Society has primarily been controlled by men.

And I believe that's why Jennifer Garner was repeatedly asked about how she balances being a working mom.  Reporters naturally do not trust her to be capable of running a company, directing a film like her husband or doing anything beyond being a mom who happens to work now and then.  Get used to it, Jennifer.

Sexism has been around since the beginning of time, so it's not going to evaporate overnight.

The laws say there is equality, but there isn't, nor will there be in my lifetime.  That's the truth.  High power jobs primarily are awarded to men.  Every once in a while a woman is given a high profile job, but it's always questioned as though she is a token woman to represent all women or she simply snuck through the cracks accidentally as though she was promoted unintentionally.  We hear rumblings about women who are promoted just to get them out of the way of the men.

As my father would say: it happens.

We have two governors in New York and New Jersey who are currently making decisions about mandatory quarantines of people who are returning from West Africa, where they may have been exposed to Ebola.  Those two governors have gone beyond the CDC recommendations.  Both of those powerful governors are men.

It raised the question: how many governors are women?

Only five governors are currently women.

The rest of the governors are men.

Do some people vote solely by choosing male names over female names?  I'm certain they do.

So, my dear Jennifer, while I appreciate you speaking up, you must realize that you are very fortunate to have a high paying job after having children and we need events such as Women in Hollywood to raise awareness.  Without these kinds of high profile events, women would be silenced.

In a time when women are overlooked for job opportunities regularly, women continue to have a tougher time in returning to the workforce full-time especially after having a gap on their resumes to raise their young children.

Women are being told by society to do it all, have a career and raise children.

At the same time, women are being punished for trying to do it all, having a career, putting a career on hold to raise children, and attempting to re-enter the workforce full-time.

Men aren't the only ones responsible for sexism either.  Women do it as well.  I've seen it.  I've experienced it.  I've had women fire me from jobs because they said they wanted a man instead. Simple as that.  It had nothing to do with me, they promised, but it only had to do with the fact that I was a woman and not a man.

Come to think of it, I've never been fired by a man.  I've only been fired by women.  And I've only been passed over for jobs by other women.

Getting a job after taking a break to raise children is by far the most difficult challenge for women.

Even if you helped another woman get promoted to further her career before you took a break to raise your children, if you expect that same woman to help you in return, don't count on it.

Women have to start supporting women.

I have seen women do the exact opposite and destroy women or prevent them from being hired or promoted.  It makes no sense.  In today's world, sexism is prevalent... even amongst the same sex.

The only way to combat sexism is for the same sex to start empowering each other.  This Women in Hollywood event was only one stepping stone... but someone needs to start a new discussion by really talking to honestly to women about what's truly going on behind the scenes.

As James Brown sang in 1966, "This is a Man's World..."
